An Art Deco Building Tucked Among the Client’s Ancestral Coconut Grove, Showcasing Their Lifestyle

Client Persona

The clients, with an IT background, sought a peaceful home that connected them to their ancestral roots. Located on the same plot purchased by their parents 20 years ago, they desired a residence that would carry the nostalgia of their past while accommodating their new lifestyle. They plan to retire, start a farm-based business, and enjoy the slow-paced life their property offers.

Adjacent to their home, the clients also plan to build a yoga resort, reflecting their new lifestyle choice post-retirement.

  • •  Plot Dimensions: 55ft x 47ft

  • •  Site Area: 2600 sq. ft. approx.

  • •  Built-up Area: 10,000 sq. ft. approx.

  • •  Project Architects: Ar. Harshavardhan, Ar. Kiran, Ar. Mahantesh

Planning the humble abode

As the clients were rebuilding their parents’ home, they chose to follow Vastu Shastra’s Aaya principles. The design brief was to create a retreat-like atmosphere, distinct from a conventional home. The plot, 20 years old and accessible for agricultural purposes, required a separate vehicle pathway and four parking spaces. The ground floor is entirely dedicated to party space, complete with a swimming pool for hosting large gatherings.

Zoning Public, Semi-Public, and Private Zones

The corner plot home features a seamless transition from the public party area and swimming pool to the semi-public family lounge and lift lobby. The first floor continues the open plan with a double-height dining area, which increases the spacious feel of the home. The northeast-facing Puja space, combined with the island kitchen, creates a central axis to the layout.

The terrace includes a yoga room, media room, and a master bedroom, making this floor a dedicated family zone for relaxation and entertainment.

Terrace Floor Amenities and Design Details

The clients were inspired by Kerala homes, so we integrated a central skylight above the dining area to enhance the home’s connection to natural light. For the elevation, the clients were keen on exploring an Art Deco building style, which allowed us to present a fresh design language for their home.

Art Deco in the Making

We proposed two elevation options: the first featured a minimal palette, while the second fully embraced Art Deco style with features like arches, moulding, and a structured design that reflected the clients’ desire for grandeur.

The Art Deco building facade integrates arches, with segmental arch windows and moulding, creating a striking visual presence. The west-facing elevation is the home’s focal point, where we added details like a nameplate, pergola, and supporting columns.

The Elevation’s Classical Elements

The Art Deco building incorporates:

  • •  Tall Columns & Pilasters with fluted detailing and capital heads

  • •  Cornices & String Courses that add horizontal depth

  • •  Stone Cladding with Ashlar texture

  • •  Ornate Wrought-Iron Railings that highlight floral scrollwork typical of European classical styles

  • •  Projected Balcony Edges with classical mouldings

These classical touches were chosen to complement the more modern Art Deco style, creating a unique blend of both design worlds.

Wrapping Up

The Art Deco building design for this corner plot home is a perfect fusion of traditional luxury and modern aesthetics. With elements that evoke nostalgia and a design approach that speaks the language of luxury and artistry, the home reflects the clients’ lifestyle while blending seamlessly into the surrounding coconut grove.
